"Another one bites the dust"

I'm an avid reader of county extension agent Ralph Mitchell's Sunday column in the Charlotte Sun. He not only writes a good column, his material is almost always relevant because he frequently writes about pests and plant diseases that plague the Punta Gorda area.

I need all the help and knowledge I can find to deal with such problems because I am always fighting one thing or another that is attacking the landscape package I put in when I built my house.

You name it, I've got it. My sago was the first to come down with the dreaded new scale from Brazil. My Christmas palms get a fungus every winter. My gardenias all have sooty mold that makes them look like they were raised in a coal mine. I have grubs in my yard that are as big as my little finger. My hibiscus look sick all the time even though I can find no evidence of bugs or disease. I think they may have nematodes chewing on their roots. My liriope ground cover plants haven't grown an inch even though I drive by untended ones around buildings or in highway medians that are 2 feet high.

None of my neighbors seem to worry too much about or suffer from these kinds of problems. This may be a result of the Mike Sherman syndrome. I don't even bother to unplug my computer, TV and stereo equipment during heavy thunderstorms anymore because I know that Sherman's house -- the neighborhood lightning rod two doors down -- is going to be the one that gets hit. He has taken two direct hits and lost one of about everything that plugs into a socket plus a few roof tiles to boot. Maybe the neighbors figure my yard is the equivalent of a bug lightning rod and will attract pestilence like Sherman's attracts lightning.

The recent column Mitchell wrote about roof rats really struck home, though I wish I had read it a couple of years earlier when I first heard scratching noises in my attic and became, of course, the first in my neighborhood to have a rodent-in-the-roof problem.

I looked up the critters on the Internet and didn't like what I found. Seems those little suckers can do major damage if left alone. I followed all the suggestions for getting rid of them, including trying to close any exterior opening that led into the attic. Nothing worked. Finally, one bit through a phone line and shorted out my whole phone system.

At that point, I had had enough and decided to nuke them with rat poison. I got lucky the first few times, and they crawled out of the attic before they died. Unfortunately, the next one died in the attic in a location I couldn't get to. The smell reminded me of the city dump in my home town and lasted almost two weeks.

Then, I got lucky. According to Mitchell, roof rats can roam up to 150 yards from their home den to find food, and my rats started making stops at the house of my good buddy and neighbor across the canal, Marty Tryon.

Marty is a high-tech kind of guy who searches for a high-tech solution to every problem. If he spotted roaches in his garage, he wouldn't just step on them. He would do extensive research and order a black box that emits a high-frequency signal, thus driving them crazy and causing them to jump in his swale and drown.

Marty came through for me. He researched the Internet and found a rat zapper that you place in your attic and bait with a pet food (Meow Mix is recommended) the raunchy rodents can't resist. The device resembles a trap, but it has a platform inside wired to a battery that puts out 30,000 volts. When a rat gets the munchies and strolls in, he gets zapped so fast his eyes are still open afterwards. A diode at the end of a wire hanging through the attic opening lights up to let you know there's a fried rodent to dispose of. Take the box down to the trash can, unload and reload.

Marty's new machine was so successful that he was dumping rats in the trash almost every day for a couple of weeks. The sanitation workers must have thought he was conducting some kind of bizarre scientific experiment in his garage.

Soon, as a result of their migratory proclivities, every roof rat in the neighborhood made a trip to Marty's rat zapper and from there to his trash can. I haven't had a rat since.

The moral to all this -- you can take care of roof rats by encouraging your neighbors to do it. That's a tip Mitchell forgot to mention.

I live in NYC, aka mouse heaven. I've had the occasional mouse show up in my apartment, but lately, it seems like they have taken over.
Even when the place is spotless, they still show up.

Within 5 minutes of my husband setting up the rat zapper, a mouse was caught! I'm so happy with this product! Worth every penny!!
2 more were caught during the course of the first night. I can walk around my apartment like I'm the boss and not the mouse.

I purchased your Rat Zapper Classic last July because we were being overrun with chipmunks and squirrels. They were digging in flowerbeds and more importantly around the foundation of the house. I read many blogs and forums on how to control them and decided to give the Rat Zapper a try. From the time I received the Zapper until winter set in, I successfully diminished the chipmunk population by 9 and the squirrel population by 5. I just put the Zapper back out for the summer and in just 2 days have managed to get 2 squirrels. I didn't expect the squirrels to climb in the Zapper since it was the smaller Classic version but they did and needless to say, they didn't climb back out. The nice part was all I had to do was dump them out to dispose of them, toss in some more bait, and turn it back on. It doesn't get much simplier than that. Since I use mine outdoors, I keep it wrapped in a gallon size Ziploc bag and wrap a rubber band around it to hold the bag in place and keep any moisture out of the electrical area.

I'm so pleased with your product that I just ordered a second one to give as a gift. Thank you for such as great product!

Due to having poultry, caged birds and a vacant block next to me, I have been waging a war against mice for years now. Generally ended up baiting them when their numbers became unbearable. Never liked doing it - it's cruel and risky to pets and wildlife. My neighbour purchased your product on the weekend and was singing it's praises but at $100 a Zapper - I was relucant. Then she visited the next day - she was up to 6 mice in the first day, then 16 the next, so I handed over my $100.
Got one the first night. Second morning came out to discover that the buggers had filled it with sand overnight!
Outsmarted them the third night and was catching one every hour! It's brillant and now the native wildlife are not in danger of being accidently poisoned.

Just wanted to say what a great product the Rat Zapper is!

I've been plagued by a couple of sneaky rats for the last few months. They have successfully evaded my efforts so far, ignoring sonic deterrents and happily taking the bait without triggering the traditional rat traps that I bought. We have two small dogs, so poison has always been out of the question. In despair, we turned to the Internet and found the Rat Zapper.

We bought a Rat Zapper last week and followed the instructions to give our "guests" a free meal to get them used to the unit being in the garden. After 3 days, the bait was taken, so we reloaded and turned on the juice! This morning, we had our first kill, less than a week after buying the unit.

Thanks again - we look forward to more kills soon!

Just got another one!
Believe it or not, after I replied to you to give you permission to print my first testimonial, I decided (4 p.m.) to set the trap up again just in case there was another rat in the garage. I went back to open a can of food for the cats at 5:30 p.m.; the red light was blinking and another big tail was hanging out the back of the trap! Two rats in less than 12 hours! Made my day...thank everyone there!

Sincerely,

Barbara, Moss Beach, CA.

Thanks Rat Zapper!

I tried the standard traps-this guy just set them off and stole the bait. I did catch one scrub jay (ouch!)

When I found the Rat Zapper- I knew as a technology wonk - I had to try it ...I followed the instructions and in two days I was greeted with success. One down, who knows how many to go... Its a great product!

Hi RatZapper,

I purchased your original RatZapper about a year ago when living in a
brownstone condo in the city of Boston. My building was built in the
mid-1800s, and there was no way to get rid of the mice until I got your
RatZapper. We killed 3 mice, with no blood and guts to clean up anywhere. It was a dream. I told everyone about your product. People laughed, until they had mice, after which they converted to RatZapperdom.

Two months ago, my husband and I moved into a home that is nearly 100 years old, now in the 'burbs. We had unwanted visitors (and I don't mean in-laws) - I saw mouse droppings under my sink, next to my refrigerator, and in an old utility closet. We hired a pest control company for $600 that was useless - two weeks after they put down bait, we were still seeing the mice's calling cards.

Having no idea where my original RatZapper ended up in my move, and at my wits end, I drove 20 miles to Sudbury to the one retailer near me that carried the RatZapper (could you please work on distribution?). Not knowing what size pest I had, I didn't want to take any chances, so I bought 3 RatZapper Ultras - one for each pooped-in location.

When I got home, I put my batteries in the zappers and set them out. 10 minutes later, one mouse was Zapped and dead. I am beyond thrilled. The new version really packs a PUNCH! I look forward to cleanly killing every last one of the deceased's "friends."

Thank you for creating such a phenomenal pest killing machine,

Dear Sirs,

Finding ourselves with an unusually high population of chipmunks and
red squirrels this year, with a resulting maze of holes and nests
throughout the property, we were searching for a solution to our
rodent problem. We have tried live traps in the past, but it always
seemed impossible to catch enough of the varmints and difficult to
relocate them far enough away (and local laws do not allow this in any
case). None of us are a good enough shot to use a pellet gun to deal
with them without unnecessary cruelty.

Our search led us to your site on the internet, and your Rat Zapper
Ultra seemed worth a try for the price, so we ordered one from a
distributor here in our province. We were a little hesitant, however,
as there didn't seem to be much anecdotal evidence that the device
could handle rodents as large as chipmunks and red squirrels.

Well, we couldn't be more impressed. Having had the device for barely
over a week, we have so far gotten rid of over 20 chipmunks and a fair
number of red squirrels as well. We will continue to move the Rat
Zapper around the property to problem areas.

Compared to poisons and traditional snap traps, this is a clean and
relatively humane way to cope with rodent infestation. The animals
appear to die instantly, and there is no mess to deal with other than
disposing of the clean carcass.

We would highly recommend the Rat Zapper Ultra to anyone looking for
an effective method of dealing with a rodent problem.

Sincerely yours,

I bought your invention about 3 weeks ago & thus far have gotten rid of 4 intruders at my house. I'm looking forward to cleansing my whole backyard and eventually will buy several more Rat Zappers for my restaurants. Congratulations to you on having come up with this wonderful device. A Device that actually works! I'm sure you'll have great success with it.
Sincerely yours,

Having 7 acres, with chickens, geese, any all kinds of critters we, of course, have a problem with rats. They were eating all of our chicken feed and my husband was loaded for bear!

We read about the ratzapper in a poultry magazine and thought - 'what the heck', we'll give it a try................fast forward 2 weeks later..........just ordered another one, this time, the Ultra and my husband is in heaven. He comes up to me every morning just like a barn cat and gets all excited.........."Another kill"! It's clean and believe me, it works.

Thank you!

The little beast was getting the better of me. It had outwitted me at every turn, jumped the sticky traps, sprang the snap traps, and turned a nose up at the poison bait. After weeks of trying various techniques, I was relegated to shhh'ing it as it chewed on my house at night. My wife began to suspect that the mouse was more of a man than I and decided that I needed to prove my worth, or be put out. She had had enough. Good fortune led me to your product. The Rat Zapper nailed him on the first night. I can now hold my head high, master of my household once again.

Thank you for saving my marriage and restoring my pride!

Thank you and Hi,

I know you have plenty of testimonials but I just had to let you know how pleased I am with your product. I had rats attracted by my birdfeeder who eventually decided to make their home in my garage. I tried traps with no success (lots of sprung traps, no rats). I was very skeptical about the ratzapper due to my lack of success with trapping, but since I have 2 small dogs I was very reluctant to try poisons (and rodetrol is currently unavailable). I found a dealer 20 miles from here but was not encouraged by the dust on the packages! After 2 days with no takers I was discouraged, but yesterday I finally noticed the light flashing as I was leaving for work. Clean up was not nearly as traumatic as I had thought it would be, but I was still afraid the other rats (I'd seen 3) would now be reluctant to enter the "death chamber." I'm pleased to report that was not the case. I've now killed 3 and plan to buy another ratzapper to put in my attic just in case. I'm so relieved that my pets were never threatened and I can't tell you what a relief it is to be getting rid of my visitors. I'm going to contact our local feed supply store and recommend they carry the ratzapper. I don't often write to companies but I had to thank you so much for a wonderful produc
